Fried Coke?????

Fried Coke a big hit at US state fairs

CHICAGO (AFP) - Fried Coke has become the latest artery-clogging hit at US state fairs, local media reports.

The gooey Coke-battered nuggets topped with cola syrup won the "most creative" title at the Texas state fair in Dallas last month. Since then, the deep-fried phenomenon has spread to North Carolina and Arizona.

"We've been getting calls from everywhere since we introduced it," Elizabeth Martin, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina fair, told the Dallas Morning News. "Everyone wants to know where they can get it."

Fried treats are as big of a draw at state fairs as the rides and prize-winning farm animals. Twinkies, cookies and even pickles are stuck with a stick, dipped in batter and then seared in the deep fryer.

Fried Coke's inventor, concessionaire Abel Gonzales Jr., is a creative fryer whose experiments have proven popular. Last year he sold 20,000 fried peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwiches, the Morning News reported. Fried Coke looks to be an even bigger hit: he sold 16,000 cups of the sticky balls in the first two weeks of the fair, which runs through Oct. 22.

Gonzales has also had more success with changing his recipe than Coca Cola did. He reworked the recipe to make the dough less cakey and more spongy so it would soak up more of the cola syrup.

"They were good before, but they are even better now," Gonzales said.

So wait, what's the base for that? Cake dough? It's not really fried Coke, then, if that's what it's made of. That's more like fried Coke cake, which, by the way, is fun to say. :looney:

Oh my arteries are clogging just looking at this. It actually doesn't look bad, but I'm not sure I'd try it. I've tried Fried Twinkies before and almost got sick from it. Fried foods and my stomach don't mix well anymore.

Hey Fuzz, what was that thing we made Mike try at the Ohio State Fair again? Fried fudge? That was pretty good, actually. It just looked a lot worse than it actually was. :p

Yeah, I'd probably try it too, I guess. Most things are worth trying once, unless they're either disgusting and shouldn't be considered food or are way the crap too spicy or something to eat without hurting yourself.

Yeah, we bought a slab of fried fudge on a stick. It was actually pretty good, it just tasted like some kind of cake with melted fudge in the middle. We all had little pieces of the one serving, none of us could stomach an entire one without sensing our arteries crying out for mercy. :p The Ohio State Fair fries everything, including candy bars, oreos, pickles, cheese, probably things that would scare the bleep out of me....
Alas...earwax.

We also played lemon hockey, but that's an entirely different story. :looney:

I think as long as you spend all day walking around at the fair, you'll probably burn off most of the calories that you gained from eating that fried junk. That's assuming, of course, that you don't eat anything else at the fair that day.

Fried Fudge on a stick? Never tried such thing before. :twitch:

Still though...it's not TOO bad as long as you eat only ONE and you eat that type of stuff sparingly. ;)
