Recommendation: Don't buy a Razer mouse.

Post by Nakor »

After much frustration, it went back to the store, and I switched back to a Logitech mouse. The Razer mouse itself wasn't bad, but the drivers were poor (the set sensitivity didn't always kick in, and the mouse's speed would occasionally change for no apparent reason), the software was worse (Limit of 5 configurations, and switching could be done automatically to a configuration when a program was opened, but not back when it was closed. By comparison, Logitech allows unlimited configurations, and goes by whatever Window you're working in at the time, so switching is fully automatic. Also the top two buttons can't be configured to certain things, including custom keystrokes... bad for gaming.) and the bugs were the worst (If a second user logged in while my account was locked, all special functions of the mouse ceased to work. After that person logged off, the PC would bluescreen within 10-20 minutes of use. Searching verified this to be unfixable, a firmware issue that Razer has not resolved yet.)

I asked Razer's support if there were any workarounds for the bluescreen issue, or if there would be a patch soon to cover it. I sent a detailed technical email including the steps I had tried, and a detailed description of how to duplicate the issue. (One thing working as a floor support taught me is exactly how to file tickets so that things flow quickly for everyone.) This is the exact response I received a couple days later:
Hello,

Fast User Switching is not supported
This was followed with a stock "Regards" followed by contact info of course. Now, I'm cool with them not supporting it. But to me, not supporting it would mean, maybe with two users logged in the mouse can't switch functions (Logitech can!), or the software can't be run on two accounts at once or something like that. "Not supporting" fast user switching should not mean "if you use it, you'll get a BSOD." That's different from not supporting it, that's breaking it.

So, my Razer Lachesis is back at Future Shop, and I'm back to using a Logitech MX Revolution. I can't speak to its longevity (or price) being great, but it's probably the most comfortable mouse I've ever used, and the software that comes with it is very well designed. Oh, and I don't get BSOD'd any more.

Wow. Think I'll stick with Logitech....

Setpoint software is good for sure. It can be enhanced with uberOptions hack.

I have the MX610 wireless. Love it. No lag and the only mouse I can find with volume buttons...

I use an LX-3. Goes nicely with my G11 keyboard.

I have a Logitech blue tooth mouse for my laptop. It's great and I love it. Only problem is every now and then it won't connect and I have to reconnect it. Usually that's when I'm in some public place with wifi and other signals all over the place. At home it rarely happens. As long as I don't have to bother with a wire or USB plug I'm fine.

Now you know the main reason I won't use wireless input devices. There is also a security issue.

On my laptop I can open the Bluetooth Devices menu and see if anything else is connecting. I've never see anything on there other than my mouse.
