Jos ei viina, terva tai sauna auta, tauti on kuolemaksi.
(Finnish for, "If booze, tar, or the sauna won't help, the illness is fatal.") Dunno about the tar, but the booze... .
Anyway, my new Gold's Gym opened up yesterday. It's a very nice place. The layout is very wide and open and they have a nice, warm colors and flat screen TVs to help that jog on the treadmills go a little quicker. One thing they have that I am interested in is the Sauna. I've never used one before. Some people have told me it's a great idea for me because of my arthritis. I didn't get a chance to use it yesterday and the trainers were too busy (I didn't have the heart to bug them and I haven't been assigned a trainer of my own yet.)
Anyone here ever experience one? How do you use it? What do you wear? The panel on the outside only mentioned how to control the timers and whatnot. >.>

Re: Saunas
I love saunas and I've used them many, many times. Never had to operate them myself, as there was always someone maintaining them, but absolutely LOVED them! I always wear my swimsuit and a towel.
Re: Saunas
Neat. It's also great for the skin right? If I remember correctly from the panel, when you are done, you take a warm, then cool shower to close the pores and cool down? *Masa is intrigued*
I really want to hook up the PS2 to the TVs near the treadmills. That would make MY run seem quicker. XD

Re: Saunas
I love saunas. I used to use them at the YMCA gym where I went to swim years ago and also when we went on vacation, there would be a sauna at a couple of the hotels we stayed at.
It used to be way back in the swingin' 70s that free 'n' easy people would go in naked. However I'm sure that is not how it's done nowadays, at least not in the public ones. You wear your swimsuit and have a towel to wipe your face when you start to sweat. Some people like to sit on a towel on the wooden benches.
Some people like to turn the sauna into a steam room by pouring a ladel of water over the hot coals. This is nice too, but always made me nervous as I'm sure there is probably lots of little electrical things milling about inside the heating unit and water and electric doesn't mix. lol It might be perfectly safe, it's just my preference not to put water on the coals.
I LOVE saunas, yes it does feel good on your aching joints and muscles although they recommend you don't go in for very long. And yes, it is common courtesy to shower using cool water after your sauna experience. Not everybody does (at least where I used it anyways.)

Re: Saunas
I've only used a sauna a couple of times in my life. I didn't enjoy the last experience very much, as it set off my claustrophobia and subsequently triggered a migraine.
I now prefer hot tubs/jacuzzis to assist with my aches and pains.

Re: Saunas
In a Gym I would wear a bathing suit or wrap myself up in a towel.
I've been to SPA'S where the women ran around naked in the dressing room, and jacuzzi area. I didn't feel comfortable at all. Especially after falling in the jacuzzi and landing on another woman.
Talk about apologizing left right.
The Sauna works when the person adds water to the rocks to make it steam and you sit and sweat to death.

Well, I haven't had a bathing suit since...uh...years ago. O.o I do have a large beach towel I can wrap up with.
Don't tempt me to pick one apart and see how it works! *Masa is always curious about the inner workings of electronics.*there is probably lots of little electrical things milling about inside the heating unit and water and electric doesn't mix. lol It might be perfectly safe, it's just my preference not to put water on the coals.

Here is a little bit about the electronics of saunas, just in case you were wondering.

Re: Saunas
Well, I finally tried it. It was nice and relaxing. My muscles stopped aching for awhile and my skin felt real soft and smooth.
I can't wait to try it again.

Re: Saunas
My masseuse has an infrared sauna that I might try one of these days. It's supposed to warm up your muscles to make the massage more effective.
You tried your best and failed miserably. The lesson is, "never try."
