Car sick dog.

Post by Debbie »

Can anyone suggest anything to stop my dog getting car sick? He is 3 years old, and has had this problem since he was a puppy. The vet is loathe to give him anything unless we are going on a big trip. He doesn't last more than about 45 minutes without being sick ... even when we haven't fed him
eakfast beforehand. Help!!! Debbie

Hi Debbie, this is an old post but I just found this forum today, so I don't know if your problem might be solved by now, but when I adopted my dog from the pound he was 1 1/2 years old & carsick from the first day. Big problem - he had to travel to work with me every day, about 45 minutes away & to visit my Mom over an hour away twice a week. He would get carsick in the morning on the way to work so I stopped feeding him until I got to work, it did'nt make a difference & then he'd throw up his
eakfast on the way home at 6 PM. The vet said it was most likely nerves & suggested that I take him for very short rides to fun places - like to a local park for a walk, to a friend's house, or just for a spin around the block & she also recommended just sitting in the car for 15 or 20 minutes without going anywhere. I would lounge in the back of my station wagon & read a magazine & talk to him & pet him - quality time! I did this every day for about 3 weeks & it worked. He's very good in the car now & loves to go visiting. Good luck & HTH.

Hi Debbie! I would follow BC's wise advise. Slowly but steadily works best. Dogs need time to adjust to the car motion effects on them... Good luck with your puppy! :) Ingrid
