Isn't this kinda creepy or what? <

>Wed Jul 6, 1:44 PM ET<
><
>PITTSBURGH - James Henry Smith was a zealous Pittsburgh Steelers fan in life, and even death could not keep him from his favorite spot: in a recliner, in front of a TV showing his beloved team in action. <
><
>Smith, 55, of Pittsburgh, died of prostate cancer Thursday. Because his death wasn't unexpected, his family was able to plan for an unusual viewing Tuesday night.<
><
>The Samuel E. Coston Funeral Home erected a small stage in a viewing room, and arranged furniture on it much as it was in Smith's home on game day Sundays.<
><
>Smith's body was on the recliner, his feet crossed and a remote in his hand. He wore black and gold silk pajamas, slippers and a robe. A pack of cigarettes and a beer were at his side, while a high-definition TV played a continuous loop of Steelers highlights.<
><
>"I couldn't stop crying after looking at the Steeler blanket in his lap," said his sister, MaryAnn Nails, 58. "He loved football and nobody did (anything) until the game went off. It was just like he was at home."<
><
>Longtime friend Mary Jones called the viewing "a cele
ation."<
><
>"I saw it and I couldn't even cry," she said. "People will see him the way he was."<
><
>Smith's burial plans were more traditional — he'll be laid to rest in a casket.<

The whole idea of even viewing someone's body at all after they're dead is wacked out. Would you want people looking at your corpse as though it was what defined you, rather than your living self? I certainly wouldn't. Thankfully, viewing the dead is not a part of Jewish tradition, so I don't have to worry about it. <

Well, even among the christian religions, it isn't really a tradition so much as a choice made by each person (or in the case that the time was never given to make such a choice, the person's family). I imagine the stricter
anches such as catholicism might have more defined rules, but from all I've seen and experienced, a funeral's proceedings is based wholly on the desires of the family and those set out in the will; tradition isn't considered of importance, unless the will or family makes it so.<
><
>I don't know what I'd want to do, but you can bet there'd be one or two things to try and lighten the mood a bit. Like maybe cosplaying as Umi one day and making them use a photo of that as the main picture at the front. >_> <i>There are many rules of<

>I don't know about anyone else, but in our family (Lithuanian Catholics by the way,) had viewings for two days in the funeral parlor (something about the rites of saying goodbye and cele
ating life. I don't really remember the exact phrasing.) Then, a Catholic mass in the Church because in the Church the soul has a clear path to God and Heaven without the fear of purgatory or the Devil interfering and snatching the soul (even if they lived a, "good" life.) Then, the graveside service. When Grandpop died, the family got lazy (much to my annoyance,) and had the Church service at the Funeral Parlor. <
><
>At my house in Baltimore, we had two sets of sliding doors for the Parlor. One set near the front door and the other between the living room and dining room. I remember asking Dad why we had them on the parlor and not between the kitchen and dining room. I clearly remember him telling me, "Because they used to keep dead people in the parlor." <

When I die, I wanna be propped up on a chair, my favourite rifle cradled in my arms, and my anime collection playing non-stop, straight through. And anyone who didn't watch it all... yeah... I'd come back and smote them. Which is what the rifle would be for. <

Just stick me in front of the PS2, TV, and computer within arms length. I can go happy. <

You know what? I think maybe I'll just jump out of an airplane with no parachute from 50,000 feet before I die. Then at least I'll have gotten to do something that'll show off my looneyness in the afterlife. <
