Wine is basically... well, you install Wine, and then all of a sudden .EXE files (from Windows) work. That's the long and short of it. Mono is something Wine uses to handle things that normally require .NET Framework (which is an MS thing for Windows). CUPS is "Common Unix Printing System" iirc. It's the software that handles printing in Linux.

Never had much problem with Flash, though off the top of my head I can't remember if it's 9 or 10 it has installed right now.
I tried finding version 9 but Adobe and their <sarcasm>infinite wisdom</sarcasm> apparently removed it from their servers when 10 came out. Minimum requirements for v. 10 is 526 MB Ram, I only have the 256 that came with my PC. Otherwise Linux runs great on my PC.
I know the joke Nakor! LOL!!!
Since adobe took over Flash, it's gone to sh*t regardless of OS!
You know the big wheel keeps on spinnin around
And Im goin with some hesitation

Flash has a half gig requirement now? o_O I mean, that may be common on systems in the last couple years, but something like Flash shouldn't need it all the same, especially it's something that will be used while multitasking a lot.
Right now, I'm just happy with XP w/ Windowblinds & some other add-ons to give me the pseudo-Vista look... when I want it.
While I can tolerate Vista... I still prefer to not to use it when possible because of the annoyances. The only redeeming quality is AERO... but Windowblinds can cover that.
I'd want to give Windows 7 a spin (& NOT the crappy Netbook "Starter" edition that only allows you to run 3 apps at one time) before I judge it.

Ah, see, that's all I wanted. A brief definition of terms I hadn't heard of.
I think the main issue at play for me here is simply my laziness. Unless I get really dissatisfied with the status quo, I don't want to bother changing things... learning new crap is a pain in the arse, because it forces me to change my routine. So unless my computer craps out on me and I'd end up getting stuck with a lousy version of Windows, I'm not going to feel like trying something else. Chances are, Win7 will be better than Vista, which means I'll most likely end up just going with that someday. My laziness is also the reason why I'll probably never end up building my own PC, even though you can get more computing power for your money that way. I just don't feel like dealing with that hassle when I can get a good enough PC which does everything I want that already comes in one piece.

I hesitate to believe that before seeing it. We all know that Vista was certainly not better than XP.
Actually rather than seeing if Win7 is better than Vista, a comparison I really don't care about since I thought Vista was crap, I'd rather know if Win7 will be better than XP, a much better comparison.
Even if Win7 is only on par with XP, I can live with that. Once XP was out for a while and got properly patched, it worked fine. I could see Win7 turning out kind of the same way. As for why Vista turned out to be such crap, I suspect it's because MS was pointlessly trying to cram all kinds of new and different crap into it and forgot to pay attention to how much of a behemoth the system itself had become. Their primary goal with Win7 is to streamline it, not add to it, so that increases the likelihood it won't suck like Vista does.
That said, yeah, I won't believe it until I see it, either. As long as my current computer doesn't go kablooie on me for any reason, this won't really matter that much in the near future, anyway. I don't have the money to spare for a new computer unless absolutely necessary, thanks to this thing called college tuition.
^ Correct. The reason Win7 is advertised as having "better XP compatibility" has nothing to do with XP software actually being more compatible. Instead, the Professional and Ultimate editions will have a "Windows XP Mode" that will allow you to run XP-only software similarly to how Wine allows Windows software to run on Linux. Note that Home Basic and Home Premium which most home users will have will NOT work with Windows XP Mode, and it seems it cannot be purchased separately for them. (According to MS, it's a free, separate download that will only work with Professional and Ultimate.)
I'm keeping an eye on Windows 7 with some reservation, it's suppose to be what Vista SHOULD have been, but it's only a matter of time before the major praises & gripes come out.
On the Business side, Windows 7 Enterprise / Ultimate editions (as well as the current RC version) contain "XP-Mode", which allows you to use XP programs within 7 as a stop-gap until you can upgrade to the Windows 7 compatible version. HOWEVER, it's not geared for gaming.
At least Microsoft is keeping the "XP Downgrade Option" for users... if things still go horribly wrong.

Eh... I suspect that I don't really use many programs that both a) only work in XP and b) I ABSOLUTELY have to use for whatever purpose they serve. I could probably always find an alternative that works in Win7 if the old one doesn't work. Besides, by the time I'd ever end up getting a computer with Win7 on it, Vista will have been out for so long that just about everything will have a Vista version, which will also work in Win7.
As far as I know, there are only three varieties: Home Basic, Professional and Ultimate. I pre-ordered Professional. The download is only necessary if you upgrade from Vista. If you upgrade from XP, the downloads are unnecessary.

Wrongo, Frongo. Vista is dead. That's why prices have dropped like a rock; dealers are dumping stock before 7 takes over. Full-retail upgrades for Premium have dropped by $70 already.
