Steam has me quite addicted. ~_~

Post by Nakor »

At first I was pretty sceptical about the service. I decided to try out Geometry Wars off it though, since it was only $4, and the game seems pretty cool. Well, that worked fine. A little while later, they've got The Orange Box on sale for $37.50, and 10% off pretty much everything (Boxing Week sale this was). I can't refuse OB at that price, and I'd been meaning to pick up The Longest Journey for a while, so I got both those bundles. Since then I've added the GTA bundle that got released (aside from a weird known glitch with the GTAs on dual-core systems, those games are great - the glitch is that every time you start the game, you have to pull up task manager and set the GTA process to only use one core, or it acts like an old DOS system with the Turbo button on lol). I still want to get the Civilization pack (I normally dislike that style of game, but the demo has me addicted) and there's a pack with all the old Wolfenstein games plus a couple of old DOS classics I used to love like Commander Keen in it. I'm trying to refrain from spending anything else until I at least beat a couple more of the games I've downloaded though. >_>

At least I can scratch The Longest Journey off my list (now on Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, its sequel), as well as Portal (although I haven't done all the challenge maps yet). I'm most of the way through HL2 as well. As for GTA:VC (the GTA I decided to start with), I'm not sure how far through that I am . . . I just love messing around in it. Oh yeah, I also want to get the DS version of Geometry Wars now. That game is addicting even with only the one level available.

So yeah. Steam turned out to be a pretty good portal into PC gaming for me. And a little hard on my pocketbook.

What exactly is Steam, Nakor? I gather it's a
service which allows for gaming on your
PC, but how exactly does it work if
you mind not my asking? Glad
you are enjoying it. I too
ran around while pefo-
rming random acti-
ons when I first
picked up an-
y GTA title
(laughs)!
Only a-
fter
gettin-
g tired of
creating ma-
yhem and gett-
ing used to the m-
echanics did I begin a-
ctual progression in the s-
tory. Drat! Now I feel the ne-
ed to return to the series once a-
gain! Curse you, Nakor (laughs)! I m-
ay continue with my progress on the PSP
version, aka Vice City Stories. Finished Lib-
erty City Stories already. Great soundtracks too!

I guess I'd figured you'd have heard of it. It's Valve's online software distribution service, I guess you could call it. http://www.steampowered.com

You install the client on your computer, and you can download and install games through the software. The games are all playable on any number of computers, although you can only have the client running on one computer at a time. (Of course, if you set Steam to offline mode, I assume it would never know.) You must be online when first downloading/updating a game of course, but after that the games can be played without connectivity.

The commentary part of Portal was interesting. In a few places it strongly implied there would be a Portal 2 that would pick up the storyline where Portal 1 left off.

Thanks for the information, Nakor! I have see
several kids at one of the local gaming sto-
res in my area playing GTA:VC, howeve-
r, I assumed they were playing the P-
C version. One of them mentione-
d Steam, but I thought they we-
re referring to how warm it
was in the store at the t-
ime (senior moment).
Laughs! Could you
imagine a multi-
player versio-
n of Porta-
l at all?

:banger:

W-
ithin
reason,
I would li-
mite the ti-
meframe in w-
hich portals can
be made and the n-
umber of portals to b-
e allowd onscreen at a t-
ime. Maybe even limit the
amount of players perhaps??

(hmm...)

I believe if you plan to put Team Fortress 2 to use from your Orange Box compilation, you'll actually need to install Steam. Even the retail versions of Valve's multiplayer games require Steam to play online, if memory serves.

That is interesting, Nakor! I take you have not
tried playing Team Fortress 2 online just
yet, eh? So there is no getting arou-
nd Steam then (laughs). Initiall-
y, I thought it was an unoffi-
cial method of playing ce-
ertain games on your
PC, but if Team F-
ortress require-
s you to use
it, then i-
f must
be of-
fici-
al.

(or a portion of it...)

Yep, it's owned and run by Valve. It serves as both their online store, as well as their way of managing servers for online games. The good news is that it's fairly well done. I haven't taken TF2 online, as I generally have little interest in multi-player FPS games.

The other nice thing about Steam is no worries about CDs being damaged, and no limit as to number of installs, on the same PC or on different ones, as long as you're only actually playing the game on one at a time.

Sounds good! If my monitor was pristine,
I would not mind trying it out, thoug-
h using the keyboard would be a
bit difficult for me since I a-
m used to using a stand-
ard gaming controlle-
r and I wish not t-
o get another
just for PC
gaming.
I am
familia-

items after t-
